If you have a work permit that’s about to expire or that you need to change, you must apply to extend it or change the conditions on it. You should apply to extend your work permit at least 50 days before your current permit expires.

You are lawfully permitted to remain in Canada while we process your application if you apply to extend or modify the terms of your work permit prior to its expiration.

We must receive your application before your work permit expires in order to keep your status current. There are two methods we can ascertain the day and hour an application was received:

• If you submit your application online, you must do so by midnight UTC on the day your work permit expires. Coordinated universal time is used by our online application system (UTC). Make sure you are aware of the difference between UTC and your local time.
• If you submit a paper application: At the case processing centre, we stamp paper applications the day they are received. If an application is submitted to us after your work permit has expired, we will count back seven days and use that date as the receipt date.
