Super Visa for parents and grandparents

Having your parents or grandparents apply for the parent and grandparent Super Visa is another way to bring them to Canada without using the sponsorship programme. The Super Visa can last for up to 10 years and permits parents and grandparents to visit Canada for five years at a time, despite the fact that it does not provide its holders permanent status (rather than the six months that most visas allow for). Process and further specifications?

A letter of invitation from the applicant's child or grandchild who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident is required (and proof of the relationship). A contract offering financial support to the super visa applicant must be signed by the child or grandchild who is delivering the letter of invitation, and they must also show that they have the required amount of income (referred to as the Low Income Cut-Off). Additionally, candidates must pass an immigration medical check and demonstrate that they will have Canadian health insurance for at least a year (provided by a Canadian insurance company). If not exempt, applicants might additionally need to submit an application for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV).

  • the applicant's connections to their nation of origin;
  • the financial and family status of the applicant;
  • what brought the applicant there;
  • the applicant's nation's general political and economic stability; and
  • Canadian hosts extended invitations.

Visa for Temporary Residency

Unless they are citizens of a nation that is exempt from this condition, applicants must also submit an application for a Temporary Resident Visa in order to be granted a Super Visa. Parents and grandparents will be able to travel freely between Canada and their home country on a frequent basis with a TRV and Super Visa instead of needing to reapply for a TRV every time they wish to visit Canada. Applications must include the required multiple-entry fee and a request for a multiple entry visa valid for up to ten years.

If applicants are from a nation that does not require a TRV, they may also apply for a Super Visa; however, in this case, an official letter will be provided to them in place of a TRV.
