A dependent child is what?

Those who move to Canada are welcome to bring their families with them and are encouraged to do so (spouse and children). However, if a sponsor's child or children are already citizens of another country, they may still be eligible to immigrate to Canada under the family class sponsorship programme as the sponsor's dependent child. This also holds true for the child or children of the sponsoring individual. Contact our Canadian immigration law office if you require assistance.

The Canadian government must authorise both the sponsor and the sponsored child (the dependent) in order to sponsor a child or children under this programme. If the sponsorship is successful, the kid or children will be granted unconditional permanent residence in Canada, granting them the opportunity to work or study there. A person is regarded as a dependent child if they:

  • Is not married or in a common-law partnership, is under the age of 22, and
  • Is older than 22 years old, has maintained a full-time study schedule, and has relied financially on parental support since before turning 22;
  • what brought the applicant there;
  • a parent's financial support since becoming a spouse or common-law partner; was a spouse or common-law partner before the age of 22 but has continued to be a full-time student
  • Is over the age of 22 but, because of a medical or mental condition, has been financially reliant on a parent since before the age of 22.
